Preventative Dentistry

Contemporary Dentistry & Implantology

Maintaining a healthy mouth is essential for preventing oral health issues like cavities and gum disease. A strong oral hygiene routine is the foundation of good dental health. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once daily. However, professional dental care is equally important. At Contemporary Dentistry and Implantology, Dr. Plourde and Dr. Papaspyridakos provide comprehensive care to help you maintain a healthy and happy smile.

Cleanings, Exams, & Digital X-Rays

Even with excellent home care, the ADA advises professional cleanings and exams every six months. Cleanings remove plaque and stubborn tartar that regular brushing cannot, ensuring a thorough clean. This preventive step helps to avoid potential oral health issues.

Regular dental exams catch oral health problems early before symptoms appear. Early detection often leads to less invasive and more cost-effective treatments. Additionally, digital dental x-rays, such as bitewings and periapical radiographs, allow dentists to identify cavities and assess the health of your teeth’s roots. Full mouth x-rays, recommended every five years, provide a complete view of your oral structures. At our office, we use a CBCT machine for detailed 3D imaging of your jaws and teeth.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is a serious condition, but early detection can improve treatment outcomes. An oral cancer screening is a simple, non-invasive examination of your head and neck to identify any unusual signs, such as bumps or discoloration.

Dental Sealants

The deep grooves of molars can be challenging to clean thoroughly, making them vulnerable to cavities. Dental sealants provide a protective barrier, sealing out bacteria and food particles from these areas.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments strengthen teeth, making them more resistant to decay. We encourage parents to ensure their children receive fluoride treatments to support healthy enamel development.

Periodontal Health

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It begins with tartar buildup, leading to gum infection, inflammation, and eventual tooth loss if untreated. At our practice, we monitor gum health during routine visits and provide scaling and root planing treatments to restore gum health and prevent further complications.

Mouthguard

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can damage enamel, cause fractures, and lead to jaw pain. A custom nightguard protects your teeth and alleviates jaw discomfort.

Sportsguard

For athletes, a custom-fit sportsguard offers crucial protection against dental injuries during physical activities. Made from durable, flexible plastic, sportsguards shield teeth and gums from impact, preventing costly repairs.

Dental Sleep Medicine

Sleep apnea disrupts restful sleep and can negatively affect overall health. We provide oral appliance therapy, using a custom-made device to keep the airway open during sleep, ensuring better rest and improved well-being.

TMJ/TMD

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) affect the jaw joints, causing pain and difficulty with movement. Treatments range from relaxation techniques and nightguards to Botox and orthodontics, depending on the severity. Learn more about managing bruxism and TMD at our office: TMD treatments.

Dentistry for Kids

We offer a kid-friendly environment where children feel safe and comfortable. The ADA recommends scheduling a child’s first dental visit by age one or when the first tooth appears. Early visits help build positive dental habits and monitor oral health. Services for children include:

  • Oral Hygiene Instruction – teaching kids proper brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Fluoride Varnish – high-concentration fluoride to strengthen enamel and repair early cavities.
  • Dental Sealants – protecting teeth from decay.
  • Dental Prophylaxis – routine cleanings for children.
