IV Sedation 101: Answering All Your Questions

July 15, 2016

Welcome back to another blog from your friends at Contemporary Dentistry and Implantology in Peabody, MA! If you suffer from dental fear or anxiety, you are not alone. Our team can help you get the care you need despite these concerns. If you are worried that you will feel stressed or discomfort during the procedure, fear not! We have a solution for you.

IV sedation is method of sedation we use to help our patients feel completely comfortable and relaxed during a procedure. If you think you need help feeling at ease, please contact our team. We would be happy to talk to you and help you determine if IV sedation is right for you. Today, we would like to help answer some of the common questions we get about this form of sedation. Again, feel free to contact us if you have any additional concerns that we did not address in this blog.

What Is IV Sedation?

IV (intravenous) sedation is a medication that is administered through an intravenous line to help you relax during a dental procedure. In fact, it allows you to sleep through it! When you wake up, you should have very little to no recollection of the procedure. You will not remember the sights, smells, sounds, or sensations that you experienced.

In What Situations Can It Be Helpful?

IV sedation can be ideal for patients who experience a considerable amount of dental fear or anxiety. It is also great for patients who are undergoing a long or complicated procedure. Basically, it is an option for patients who do not want to remember any unpleasant sights, smells, sounds, or sensations from the procedure they are undergoing. While we work hard to provide safe, comfortable care in every situation, IV sedation will allow you to be 100 percent sure that your experience will be pain- and stress-free.

How Does IV Sedation Make You Feel?

IV sedation allows you to sleep through any dental procedure. It simply makes you feel groggy. Because of this, the use of IV sedation requires that you bring a family member or friend with you to your appointment as a ride a home. While we do allow you time to recover after the sedation, you will feel groggy for a while afterward. Therefore, it is not safe to drive home from our office. For more detailed information, please speak with our team.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

Absolutely. In the state of Massachusetts, health care providers have to undergo advanced training as well as obtain a special permit to administer IV sedation. Our staff is specially trained to do this and properly licensed. Under our expert supervision, the administration of IV sedation is completely safe. We monitor your state throughout the procedure to make sure you are completely comfortable and safe the entire time.

Is IV Sedation Right For Me?

IV sedation is a great option if you are concerned about feeling stressed or uncomfortable during a procedure. However, we need to examine your situation and talk to you in person to determine if IV sedation is right for you. Please schedule a consultation with our team to talk about our sedation options.

How Else Can You Help Me Feel Comfortable?

From the very moment you walk into our office, we are working hard to help you feel comfortable and at ease. Our team is experienced with helping patients in all kinds of situations feel relaxed and welcome in our office. It is our goal to help you feel safe and have a positive experience. Your comfort is our top priority while you are in our care!

How Can I Make An Appointment?

Are you ready to get the care you need, possibly with the help of IV sedation? Great! Give us a call. You can reach us by dialing 978-278-1760 or by requesting an appointment online.

Don’t let your nerves get the better of you. Dental care is important for a healthy, beautiful smile! We would be delighted to help you improve your smile despite your dental fear or anxiety.

Dear Patients:

We are so very excited to announce that we are once again able to provide dental services for you, our valuable patients. Contemporary Dentistry & Implantology will reopen on May 18, 2020.

While things are certainly not “business as usual,” we wanted to let you know we are here for you in our clean, comfortable, and safe environment. Our standards are well “above and beyond” what the American Dental Association and Centers for Disease Control recommend. We love what we do and the people we do it for. We are always here for you.

This high level of service is just one of the many ways that we are supporting our community, and it is included in the excellent work that we do…we go through a comprehensive disinfection after every patient is cared for.

Dr. John Argeros, Dr. Donald Plourde and all team members here at Contemporary Dentistry & Implantology will continue to go above and beyond for our patients…it is second nature. For this and many other reasons, many of our patients have trusted their care with us for years.

We very much look forward to seeing you, your family, and your friends very soon.

Sincerely,
Dr. John Argeros, Dr. Donald Plourde
