Why would I need root canal therapy?
Root canals therapy is needed when the interior tissue of the tooth (called the dental pulp) becomes infected. The infection must be removed to restore the health of the tooth. The root canal procedure is designed to do just that, as well as to eliminate pain and preserve the tooth against future infection. This procedure can make a dramatic difference in the health of your mouth and your overall comfort.
If you are experiencing any of the following signs, you may need a root canal. Please contact our Peabody, MA dental office immediately.
- severe pain when eating or when putting pressure on the area
- lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- small, pimple-like bump on the gums
What is a root canal procedure like?
A root canal procedure is pretty routine these days. Dr. Sozanski, our in-house endodontist, will first access the interior of the tooth using specialized tools that are designed to create as little damage as possible to the structure of the tooth. He will then carefully remove all of the infected dental pulp. After the pulp is removed, he will sterilize the now-empty cavity and fill it with a putty-like substance called gutta-percha. He then seals the cavity before finishing the job with the brand-new, strong dental crown.
After this process is complete, you will no longer be able to feel any pain in that tooth. We also seal the tooth against future infection to reduce the likelihood of any more problems occurring. This process eliminates your pain, restores the health of your tooth, and helps to prevent future dental issues with that tooth.
Does root canal therapy hurt?
Not at all! Our root canal therapy is completely painless. We use a local anesthetic to completely numb the area before beginning the procedure. We also offer IV dental sedation, designed to allow you to feel as comfortable as possible throughout treatment. IV dental sedation allows you to sleep through the procedure, waking with little or no memory of the actual dental work. To learn more about how we can make you feel completely comfortable while in our care, please call or visit our Peabody, MA dental office to know more how we can help you relieve dental anxiety.
Dr. John Argeros holds a Mastership at International Congress of Oral Implantology, he is also a member of American Academy of Implant Dentistry and Academy of Osseointegration, his education and the organizations he is involved with made him a professional in dentistry and dental implants.
